I just learnt a fairly sobering fact. Recent industry figures suggest more than three million self-published books may be released in a single year.

Three million! That is a lot of frigging zeros.

Well, I guess that number is about to become three million and one, because I am just about to release my first novel: a book I have been working on for the better part of six months called The Concordance.

So, how does an author you have never heard of convince you to read a book you never knew existed? I can honestly say I have no bloody idea. But I am 46 years old, I like telling stories, and apparently I am now the kind of person who says things like “I should start a blog.” So I’m going to lean into what I know, rock it like it’s 2003, and start one.

Think of this as a series.

I’ll take you from where I was six months ago all the way to now, and probably a fair way beyond that. I’ll tell you how the book started, what the writing process looked like, what worked, what absolutely did not work, what inspired me, and how a half-formed idea somehow turned into a finished novel.

But mostly, I’ll tell you the story of how I got bored on a train, had a nerdy conversation with a mate, got excited about some buck-wild ideas, and ended up writing a book called The Concordance with that mate.

That mate just happens to be a slightly unhinged AI bot named G.
